For 'voluntourists,' it's work and play in NH

Here can be more to a vacation than kicking back with umbrella drinks in a beach hammock.

Voluntourism and ecotourism — ways of combining travel with helping out a charitable or nonprofit organization — have long lured people away from the theme park/cruise routine. Opportunities are available around the globe, but now the New Hampshire Department of Travel and Tourism has packaged such opportunities for those who’d like to help out and enjoy the outdoors for the price of a tank of gas and a couple of nights in a hotel.

The Appalachian Mountain Club offers Family Adventure Days at Cardigan Lodge in Alexandria, N.H. Located two hours north of Boston, not far from Newfound Lake, the Family Adventure Days program leads groups into the White Mountains. Trail volunteers assist in trail maintenance by working on bog bridging and maintaining the more than 1,500 miles of trails snaking through the forests of the Granite State.

Openings for multiweek and weeklong vacations — for both teens and adults — are available starting June 19 and into August. Voluntourists will work on projects ranging from basic clearing brush along trails to more advanced rock work and repairing wood structures.

It’s not all work and no play, however. Participants are provided plenty of time to enjoy their surroundings, swim, hike and eat great food. A weeklong experience costs $220, while a four-week leadership and conservation crew spot will run $1,240. To book, go to outdoors.org.

Closer to home, Star Island Spring and Summer Volunteer Weekends offers the chance to live and work on the Isles of Shoals just off the Rye, N.H., coast. Volunteers can help awaken this wind-swept isle from its winter slumber by helping out in housekeeping, kitchen staff, painting and groundskeeping.

“There are 37 buildings that range in age from pre-Revolutionary War to the 1970s,” volunteer coordinator Athena Steinkraus said. “We have plenty of opportunities on Star Island.”

Room and board is provided in the rustic main hotel building, which was built in 1875. The summer volunteer season starts June 18, but applications are posted on StarIsland.org.

Most of the voluntourism opportunities aren’t what most people would categorize as glamorous. But if you follow your karma-boosting workout with some pampering at a classic N.H. resort, working through your vacation gets a bit more palatable.

What to Know when Selecting a Wooden Play Kitchen

When I was a kid, I would have loved a wooden play kitchen . I’m all grown up now but I still see the appeal of these toys when I see my son gravitate to the play kitchens at friends’ houses and play centers. If you’re considering a play kitchen for your child, definitely think about purchasing a wooden one. Toys made out of wood will last and last. They can hold up to whatever your child dishes out (excuse the pun). Some are beautifully crafted, complete with intricate detail. They would look great displayed in your own kitchen or dining room and don’t have to be kept in a play room. If your child is rough on his or her toys, a wooden kitchen is a great idea. If one part gets damaged, it’s easy to replace it. This isn’t the case with plastic kitchens which often have to be thrown out when part of it gets broken. You can also make a more environmentally-friendly choice and choose a kitchen made from sustainable wood and a water-based finish.
