Writing Queries
A query is a request written to a publisher or an agent asking them to take a look at your book. Writers also write queries for articles they’d like to write for magazines but in today’s column I want to stick to query writing for books. Recently I read a simpler way of approaching queries and I’d like to share it.
If you do any research at all about the writing of queries you have probably come to the point where you are scared to death to put words on paper. Everyone has an opinion about how to write a good query and they are opinions that often differ from each other causing confusion for those new to the game. Compounding the stress caused by the conflicting advice, the same people are in total agreement that a query written well can make all the difference between snagging an agent or publisher and not.
Basically a query is a one page letter introducing you and your book to the agent or publisher. Most agents and publishers do not want you to send your entire manuscript to them. Submission guidelines usually tell you what they want, quite often the first approach is a query letter only and from that the agent or publisher will make a decision about if they want to see anything else. If they do they’ll usually ask for the first three chapters. If they like that they will ask for the entire manuscript. All of these steps are gates through which you and your book must pass. Basically the hook is a tagline for your book. It needs to be exciting and it needs to hook the reader and not let them go and it may be the most difficult part of the entire letter. Let me give you an example from one of my own books, Mmele and the Magic Bones so you can get an idea.
If Kagisano Springs is to be saved from the greedy land developers, Ntatemogolo must travel to The Place of the Ancestors to ask for help, but he can only return to The Land of the Living with the help of Mmele, who must set out on a dangerous journey- if he fails, not only will Kagisano Springs be lost forever but so will Ntatemogolo.
The Mini-Synopsis In the last section, keep to information about you as a writer. Include where you have been published, any awards you’ve won. Don’t mention your day job unless it has some relation to your book. For example, if your book is called “Most Famous Criminal Cases in Botswana” and you’re a police officer then mention it. If you’re writing a non-fiction book and some of your personal life experiences affect the book then mention it.
