Wedding cake toppers are something I never thought about.  When it comes to imagining your wedding day, you plan what kind of dress you want, what colors, where it’s going to be  – you don’t even consider little details like what’s going on top of the cake.  For example, in high school I dreamed of a burnt orange/hunter green wedding with a cake that looked like a stack of presents.  Then before graduating college, my friends and I planned our dates – I got September, 10th, 2011 (9/10/11) and another friend got December 13th, 2014 (12/13/14).  Unless she has since gotten a new phone (which she probably has), an alarm will go off in September saying Joe and I are getting married.  I kid you not.  The big pieces were “decided” on (I doubt any of them will show up in my actual wedding), but nothing small.

When it came to actually planning all of these details, I wasn’t sure if I wanted a cake topper.  Not only was I stressed about booking all of the major items, but I didn’t really have the time to consider small details.  It’s also a tough decision because we don’t know what our cake will look like.  I mean, we know what we like , but we’re not going to go to the bakery until September.  Two months is probably not enough time to order something personalized, hence why I’m looking now.

There are quite a few routes we can go:

The first one would be personalized wooden dolls (this one is via Kathy at peanutbutterbandit’s etsy shop ).  You can find a whole slew of them on Etsy (or maybe you’re talented enough to DIY) and they are customized to look like the bride and the groom.  This would be a nice little keepsake to have, plus it’s fun to see yourself turned into a doll.

Then of course, we could go a completely different route and get a monogram (which I found over at Beau-Coup ).  Maybe we would only use “D” for the last name (no J or K).  Who knows.  I think this is a little too modern for our wedding style.  Plus, what do you do with it when you’re done?  Display a letter?

And why not go completely traditional with a bride and groom cake topper?  I found this one over at Martha Stewart Weddings and I find it so sweet.  I have such nice memories of visiting my Aunt and Uncle in Brooklyn and looking at and playing with their cake topper.  Granted, they barely resemble the bride and groom, but I guess that was the time.
