Going to great pains to uncover old folk cures for some of our ailments

Have you noticed, and I know I’ve mentioned this before, that whenever you get a really painful toothache, it’s always over a weekend or a long bank holiday?

You haven’t? Then aren’t you the lucky one.

And, if that isn’t bad enough, isn’t it usually the time when you find out that you haven’t got any painkillers in the house?

We’ve all been there. And I bet that’s the time you start racking your brains trying to remember some of the old folk cures your grandparents would use in similar circumstances.

I know that in my family the remedy used mostly was the tried and trusted oil of cloves.

A few drops applied to the affected tooth usually worked wonders.

But I’m going back to a time when most households would have a cupboard full of pills and potions, and these they would have relied on in the bad old pre-NHS days.

But I suspect, for most families those days are dead and gone. And if you haven’t any painkillers in the house, it’s exceedingly unlikely that you’ll have any oil of cloves to hand.

You could, if you’re really desperate, try an old folk remedy.

How about picking up the jawbone of a horse with your teeth, walking backwards for nine steps and then dropping it. Only one problem, first find a horse’s jawbone or even find a horse that’s near to hand.

If there is one, you could try the old local cure of having it breathe into your mouth twice a day.

If you can’t get access to a live horse, why not try to get hold of a tooth of a dead one.

According to an Irish folk cure, you can get some relief from pain by rubbing the tooth over the jaw covering the aching tooth.

Another old cure is to eat grasshopper eggs. Interesting, but where are you going to find any grasshoppers?

And, another cure: you could pick your teeth with – if I can decipher my scribbled notes – the middle toe of an owl.

I think the RSPB might have something to say about this one. But why an owl and not a chicken or a bird that’s more accessible?

Speaking of poultry, another old Lakeland cure involves rubbing the affected tooth with the brains of a hen. Messy!

It’s so much easier to cut a piece out of a raw potato and place it on the aching tooth. It’s supposed to work.
